Education on the protection of seafarers’ mental health

The teachers of the Maritime Department of the University of Dubrovnik participated in a three-day training on the importance of seafarers’ mental health. The training was held in Rijeka, as a continuation of the cooperation of maritime studies departments and faculties at Croatian universities, the Seafarers’ Union of Croatia and the International Transport Workers’ Association (ITF).

Psychologist Rasini Bandara and Asif Altaf, MD, from ITF educated teachers about the importance of seafarers’ mental health, about how to recognise early symptoms of anxiety and stress and how to tackle them. The aim is to introduce a curriculum about the protection of seafarers’ mental health in certain courses at maritime departments and faculties and to educate the students of maritime studies how to protect their mental health and how to recognise when something goes wrong as well as where and how to seek help.

The Republic of Croatia will thus be the first European country where students of maritime studies will get some knowledge about mental health protection.
