The scientific monograph ‘Economic Thought in the Antiquity and Middle Ages’ authored by Emeritus Professor Đuro Benić, PhD and Associate Professor Marija Benić Penava, PhD was presented in the amphitheatre of the University Campus. Besides the authors, the event was attended by the book reviewers, Emeritus Professor Ivo Družić, PhD, from the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Zagreb, and Professor Alka Obadić, PhD, Full Professor with tenure, also from the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Zagreb.
Associate Professor Nebojša Stojčić, PhD, Vice Rector for Business Affairs, greeted the attendees at the commencement of this event, stating that Professor Benić was the most prolific author at the University of Dubrovnik and that he himself had been honoured to work along his side and make his first scientific steps under his mentorship and guidance. Professor Alka Obadić, PhD talked about the authors and about the structure and content of the book, which has a wide reach. Emeritus Professor Ivo Družić, PhD pointed out that this was a work that required standing up in respect when talked about it as a sign of honour and respect. Namely, the book has a meticulous approach to research and it systemises the collected facts in a scientific monograph for the first time. All of the above makes this book a truly capital piece of economic thought.
On behalf of both authors, Emeritus Professor Đuro Benić, PhD addressed the attendees and thanked everybody who had contributed to the publication of this book. He thanked to the Školska knjiga publishing house for their long-term cooperation, to his colleagues and family for their support and patience for his scientific work. He also thanked all attendees for joining the event, stating that he had learned a lot by writing this book and that it was a pleasure for him to do research and scientific work alongside his daughter, Associate Professor Marija Benić Penava, PhD.
The monograph is the result of a five-year research, and the major part of the book contains data that have become available to the wider public for the first time. This original scientific work published by Školska knjiga fills a void in the Croatian economic literature dealing with the economic thought of the Antiquity and the Middle Ages. By its concept and structure, the book is intended not only for students studying the history of economic thought and economic experts, but also to the wider public.
The number of bibliographic references used by the authors in this work is impressive, listing a total of 373 sources, among which 201 books and 91 articles as well as 1,285 annotations. The monograph is richly illustrated and has an additional digital content (158 publicly available documents and video records). This book is divided into two basic parts: Economic Thought in the Antiquities and Economic Thought in the Middle Ages. The first part is comprised of six chapters (Economic Ideas and Thoughts in the Bible, Mesophotamia, India, Greece and Rome) and the second of two chapters (Economic Thought in Islam and Economic Thought in Christianity).
