Study of History of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean participates in marking of the Year of the Statute of Dubrovnik

During 2022, Dubrovnik will mark the 750th anniversary of the adoption and entry into force of the Statute of Dubrovnik from 1272. The University of Dubrovnik joined the ceremonious marking of this important jubilee. The workshops ‘The Statute and everyday life: marking of the 750th anniversary of the Statute’ will be held in May and December in the Reading Room of the Dubrovnik State Archive and they will be held by Associate Professor Jasenka Maslek, PhD, and Assistant Professor Irena Ipšić. They are intended for the graduates of the Dubrovnik secondary schools and to the students of the undergraduate study programme of History of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean of the University of Dubrovnik. The Dubrovnik State Archive also participates in the organisation of this programme.
The Statute of Dubrovnik was proclaimed and it entered into force on 29 May 1272, in the presence of the governing officials and with the acclamation by the people of Dubrovnik, who had gathered at the sound of the bells to celebrate this event. During a full five centuries (i.e. until the fall of the Republic in 1808), it had been the foundation of the legal order and had become a strong symbol of the collective identity and the statehood of Dubrovnik. The text of the Statute was written in Latin, only recently to be translated into Croatian and English.
