Scientists from the University of Dubrovnik Associate Professor Marijana Pećarević, PhD, Assistant Professor Ivona Milić Beran, PhD and Assistant Professor Ivana Palunko, PhD, participated in the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in the Župa Dubrovačka Elementary School. On this occasion, a round table was held within the school Erasmus+ project Better Together, which promotes European values and goals, including gender equality.
The Župa Dubrovačka Elementary School dedicated the entire last week to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This was done through three project activities. The last of these activities was the mentioned round table, which was attended by three scientists from the University as well as by Ivana Mijić Vulinović, PhD, members of the School Students’ Council and the interested eight grader from this school. The four scientists from Dubrovnik presented their jobs and their areas of scientific research. In giving answers to student questions, they send them a clear message that social stereotypes should by no means influence their choice of future profession. This should only be guided by their personal interest, their capabilities and their diligent and hard work.
Last week, pupils reviewed the curriculum vitae of renowned female scientists from the history and prepared a virtual exhibition available at the following link: https://www.emaze.com/@ALROCQLTQ/ene-u-povijesti-znanosti. After that, representatives of various classes gave a presentation about this exhibition at their class meetings, presenting in more detail the female scientist whose curriculum vitae they had researched. Junior year pupils participated in the workshops about gender equality together with their teachers. The aim was to make them aware about gender differences in both science and in everyday life and. This was done by giving examples of renowned female scientists and their achievements, point out the stereotypes still present in our society that greatly affect the choice of profession and the area of interest of both girls and boys.
