Associate Professor Danijela Jemo and Asst. Prof. Mateo Miguel Kodrič Kesovia, along with senior curator of Dubrovnik Museums, Barbara Margaretić, have published the paper ‘Challenges of Exhibiting Ethnographic Costumes: Interinstitutional Project of Replacing Display Mannequins in Ethnographic Museum of Dubrovnik’ in the prestigious journal Heritage. The journal is indexed in SCOPUS and Web of Science databases.
The paper addresses the challenges of displaying ethnographic costumes at the Ethnographic Museum in Dubrovnik. Until recently, the costumes were displayed on mannequins on mannequins created by the academic artist Zvonimir Lončarić created by sculptor Zvonimir Lončarić. However, due to their negative impact on the costumes, it was decided to replace the existing mannequins with new, museum-quality ones. As part of this process, two project-based learning workshops were organised, led by a team of textile conservators from the University of Dubrovnik and the Croatian Conservation Institute, in collaboration with the curator of the Ethnographic Museum. The paper reviews past display methods, new solutions implemented in accordance with modern conservation-restoration practices, and takes into account ethical guidelines, decision-making processes, and contemporary materials.
