UNIDU radio hosting the 17th international Hear Me seminar

Student UNIDU radio of the University of Dubrovnik is hosting the 17th international student radio seminar HEAR ME, to be held on 7 and 8 October 2022. It will gather approximately 50 students from about 15 radio stations and radio shows from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia. This will also serve as an opportunity to celebrate the 15 years of UNIDU radio. The programme will commence at the World Student Radio Day on Friday, live on the UNIDU radio, with the official opening ceremony to be held at noon in the Campus building.

Representatives of student radio stations and radio shows will introduce themselves by making short introductory reports and will socialise at UNIDU radio on Friday from 8:00 hours. Lectures for both seminar days will be held in the Campus building at noon. The first lecture under the title ‘Where were we please?’ will be dedicated to student radio sustainability as a medium, and it will be held by Zdravko Kedžo, PhD. The second lecture under the title ‘Language and speech in the media’ will be held by journalist Boris Kanazir and phonetician Ana Vlah, former members of student radios, and today employed at HRT.

Afternoons in the Student Dormitory are reserved for round tables to discuss future projects and cooperation and to exchange information about the content and the radio shows. The workshop ‘Sound identity and production’ will be held by musician and producer Žarko Dragojević, formerly a member of the UNIDU radio. The entertainment part will include the ‘Hear Me Quiz’ on Friday at 20:00 hours in the Student Dormitory. Music will be selected by music editors from all participating radios.

HEAR ME is an international student radio seminar from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia. This is a regular opportunity for the colleagues from the region to exchange their experiences and knowledge, especially their practical knowledge. The objective is to enhance the cooperation among student radios through content exchange by building a Student Radio Network. This project would formalise the current student radio cooperation. It is important to highlight the educational character of this seminar because expert lectures and workshops will tackle the current topics of radio journalism, especially the challenges that the quick new media development represents for radio stations.

Such gatherings are important for the professional education of students, for their experience exchange as well as for strengthening the inter-university cooperation and student initiative in Croatia and in the region. The participation in the student radios’ HEAR ME seminar is a significant and valuable opportunity to promote and present universities and other organisations in the entire region. It opens up the possibilities for further student networking through various types of future cooperation.

However, the most important reason for its holding is to see each other again live after the three-year break due to the pandemic. This is the fourth time that the students from Dubrovnik have been hosting this seminar. The project was co-funded by the University of Dubrovnik, Students’ Council of the University of Dubrovnik and the Student Centre Dubrovnik.
