As part of the fourth edition of the “Domovina” Summer School, held this year from 1 to 13 June, the City of Dubrovnik welcomed young descendants of Croatian emigrants from around the world.
This project, organized by the Central State Office for Croats Abroad, brings together young people of Croatian heritage from South America, Australia, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Europe, and the United Kingdom. Its goal is to help them connect with their homeland, culture, and identity.
At the Student Dormitory of the University of Dubrovnik, participants were welcomed by Marko Potrebica, President of the Dubrovnik City Council and Director of the Dubrovnik Student Centre, and Professor Mato Brautović, PhD, Vice-Rector for Internationalization, Public Relations, and Student Affairs at the University of Dubrovnik. On behalf of the City of Dubrovnik and the University, they warmly greeted the group and emphasized the importance of initiatives that strengthen the connection between the Croatian diaspora and their homeland. They also spoke about the significance of encouraging young descendants of Croatian emigrants to reconnect with their roots and explore opportunities in Croatia. Nikolina Potrebica, Head of the International Students Office, presented the University of Dubrovnik’s study programmes, highlighting those available in English and the opportunities available to Croats living abroad.
During their stay in Croatia, the participants will visit numerous sites of cultural, religious, and historical importance, and become acquainted with Croatian cuisine, music, language, and way of life. The “Domovina” Summer School provides an opportunity for dialogue, cultural exchange, and the strengthening of identity through a shared rediscovery of their ancestral homeland. This encounter is a valuable step toward preserving Croatian identity among emigrant communities and their descendants, offering them a deeper understanding of their roots and connection to the Croatian people.
