The Laboratory for Autonomous Intelligent Systems (LARIAT) of the University of Dubrovnik took part in the third edition of the Mediterranean Machine Learning (M2L) Summer School, held in Split from 8 to 12 September 2025 and organized by the AI Education Foundation and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB), University of Split.
This international summer school brought together over 250 participants from around the world — students, researchers, and industry experts — to exchange knowledge and experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence, and to foster scientific collaboration in the Mediterranean region.
LARIAT was represented by prof. Ivana Palunko, PhD, head of LARIAT, as well as Anna Panfil and Antun Đuraš. Prof. dr. sc. Ivana Palunko participated as a speaker and had the honor of opening the program of the third day with a lecture titled “Intro to RL and application to robotics”, while Anna and Antun took part as attendees, actively following lectures, workshops and group assignments, and establishing valuable connections with peers and lecturers from leading international institutions and technology companies.
The M2L Summer School program featured a series of intensive lectures, hands-on workshops and panel discussions on topics such as machine learning, deep neural networks, generative models, natural language processing, reinforcement learning and the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence. The workshops were designed to encourage teamwork and the direct application of acquired knowledge to real-world data.
Alongside Ivana Palunko, the summer school also featured numerous internationally recognized experts from Google DeepMind, Amazon, the University of Cambridge, University College London, the University of Warsaw, and Cohere, as well as many other distinguished scientists and engineers from leading global research centers and technology companies.
LARIAT’s participation in such prestigious summer school confirms the University of Dubrovnik’s commitment to the continuous development of knowledge and research in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as to strengthening the international visibility and collaboration of its researchers and students with leading experts worldwide.
