Lecture on Artificial Intelligence and Media Literacy Held at the University of Dubrovnik

The Faculty of Media and Public Relations at the University of Dubrovnik once again joined the celebration of Media Literacy Days, a national initiative aimed at fostering critical understanding of media, recognizing disinformation, and promoting responsible participation in the digital environment.

As part of this year’s programme, Assist. Prof. Iva Nenadić, PhD, delivered a public lecture on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, titled “Between Innovation and Manipulation: How to Be Democratic Citizens in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?”. The lecture was intended for participants of the University of the Third Age as well as the general public.

Speaking about changes in the ways people access information, Dr Nenadić highlighted that we increasingly live in separate informational realities.

“For example, older generations primarily rely on television as their main source of information, while younger audiences increasingly depend on algorithm-driven recommendations from digital platforms, which tend to promote podcasters and ‘newsfluencers’ over traditional media and journalism,” Assist. Prof. Nenadić pointed out, emphasizing that such intergenerational discussions on the challenges of the contemporary information environment represent an important form of horizontal learning and investment in media literacy.

A special segment of the lecture focused on generative artificial intelligence, addressing both its benefits and potential risks. The lecturer noted:

“Generative artificial intelligence adds further fuel to the problem of disinformation, threatens privacy, copyright, the cognitive potential of young people, and even security—especially for vulnerable individuals. At the same time, it offers numerous benefits, as it can facilitate learning, understanding, and access to information for people with disabilities.”

This lecture is yet another in a series of activities within the institutional project eDUres-MIL, through which the Faculty promotes media literacy, lifelong learning, and socially responsible engagement.
