Title: Time Iteration Methods for Controllability
Abstract:
This work investigates time iteration methods as a tool for analyzing controllability in nonlinear control systems. It is based on the lectures of Frédéric Marbach (École normale supérieure, Université Paris Sciences et Lettres) delivered at the MINT Graduate School on Control, Inverse Problems and Spectral Theory (Toulouse, 2025). The approach relies on studying the controllability of linearized systems around equilibria or trajectories, where linear controllability provides key insights into the local behavior of the corresponding nonlinear dynamics. Particular emphasis is placed on the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation, a nonlinear partial differential equation modeling wave propagation. Combining linear controllability results with functional analytic techniques and fixed-point arguments, the framework allows one to establish small-time local controllability for nonlinear systems under suitable geometric and spectral assumptions.
